The Chilterns Cycleway winds its way through beautiful rolling countryside, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, following quiet country lanes through market towns and picturesque villages nestled in the hills and valleys with a few short steep climbs, airy ridge tops with expansive views and long flowing descents.

We start this tour in the beautiful market town of Henley-on-Thames, home of the annual Royal Regatta. Riding out of town we immediately find ourselves in the quiet Chiltern Hills, following winding country lanes, through Stoke Row, home to the Maharaja’s Well, on to the historic village of Ewelme with its impressive 15th Century Church and cloisters, and onwards up narrow sweeping lanes, past the 11th Century Sydenham Church and Christmas Common. Here we make a long descent through picturesque Turville, home of The Vicar of Dibley and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, into the Hambleden valley where we spend the night at a local B&B.

After a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast, we continue through quaint villages and country lanes, passing through a National Nature Reserve and Lord Carrington’s Lyde water garden in Bledlow. A short ride after lunch takes us to the National Trust owned town of West Wycombe, home to many historic buildings and the mysterious Hell-Fire Caves.  We ride on in the afternoon back to the Hambleden valley, through the pretty village of Hambleden, across the weir at Mill End and back along the Thames to Henley, completing our Chilterns loop.
